Air filters play a crucial role in your air conditioner’s operation. They trap dirt, dust, pollen, and other midair particles and keep them from entering your system. Read more to learn why air filters are necessary to run your AC.

Can Your AC Run without a Filter?

Even though your air conditioning system will work without a filter, experts recommend against it because it can cause severe damage to your AC system and then you’ll need to pay for expensive repairs.

Risks of Running HVAC Systems without a Filter

Here are the risks of running your AC without a filter.

Condensation Drain Problems

Without a filter, the condensation drain will fail to drain the moisture from your AC unit. This will result in condensation accumulation on the Freon tubing. The condensation will then start dripping down the pan, causing water damage to the whole system.

Air Quality Problems

Decreased air quality is the most common problem when AC’s are run without a filter. Dust will not settle down in a room with an AC running continuously without a filer. This will eventually lead to the clogging of the unit.

Freon Tube Problems

An air conditioner works by pulling air from your room and blowing it across copper tubes that are filled with Freon. When unfiltered air blows across these wet tubes, dirt gets stuck to the condensation and coats the blades. This causes the system to work inefficiently.

Ductwork Problems

Dirt that escapes from the Freon tubes will travel down to your ductwork and get trapped by the uneven aluminum tubes. This allows dampness to build up, causing mold growth inside your ductwork. This will cause health problems for you and your family.

What Happens If You Don’t Replace the AC Filter?

If you don’t replace your air filter often enough, it will work less efficiently or may stop working altogether due to clogged filters. You might need to buy new parts or replace your AC.

Why Should You Change Your AC Filter?

Changing your AC filters ensures that the air quality in your home is at its best. Also, it reduces the chances of a system breakdown and boosts the peak performance of the system during hot months.

How Is an AC Filter Replaced?

To change your AC filter, vacuum or wipe down the AC panel door and remove the filter from the AC unit. If you are using permanent or washable filters, take it outside and spray water on it using a hose until its spotlessly clean. Now dry the filter and reinstall it. In case you are using disposable filters, look for the exact filter size to purchase and install a replacement filter.
